Girl in this World

They ask so sweetly,
To twirl a hair or plaster on a blush.
It seems awfully rude to reject.
They have so much love to give.

Then, they ask ever so gently,
Why not braid your hair this way,
And rouge your pretty lips?
Who has the insensitive heart to refuse?

I can relate the words of wisdom and philosophy,
And my thoughts on travel and adventure,
But it may seem a bit inappropriate for now,
So let us save it for a another day.

They suggest instead that it be best to share
Some pleasantries with gallant company,
And smile my sweet smile before them
Oh how lovely and charming I can be!

Then, they remark that I ought to dress smart
And I should try on that gold they bought,
And I should give up my books and tales,
For who reads them that are forgot.

Then they wish that I bear their secrets,
And the banes they inflict upon each other,
For love is only a ravishing garment
That is put on display for another.

I am not mine, but theirs to order
Oh how silly to think that I am unique!
Take me for I was meant to give,
A girl born but never to speak.
